Why This Fails Locally

What you can reasonably do yourself: look at the cable. If you see rust, kinks, or frayed strands anywhere along its length, especially near the drum or the pulley, that's your sign to get it replaced before it snaps rather than after. A door that's already sagging to one side or hanging crooked in the track is telling you a cable has already partly given way. At that point, don't run the opener. Running a door on a compromised cable is how a cable finishes failing while the door is halfway up, and then you're dealing with a door that's stuck instead of one that's slow.

The Symptom

A less obvious version: the door looks fine sitting closed, but when it opens it visibly tilts, one corner lifting a half-second before the other. That's a cable that's stretched or partly frayed but hasn't snapped yet, the door is still being lifted, just unevenly, by whatever cable strands are left intact.
